The Journey
Born in Ashland, Oregon, a town steeped in theater and design, I was raised in a world where creativity was part of daily life. With a house-flipping father, a New York fashion-savvy mother, and a treasure-hunting antique-dealer grandmother, I developed a deep appreciation for aesthetics, craftsmanship, and storytelling from an early age. After moving to the Bay Area in 2009, I witnessed firsthand the resilience of my family as they rebuilt their lives post-2008. These experiences shaped both my work ethic and resourceful design sensibility. I was further influenced by my stepmother, a former producer at Industrial Light & Magic turned real estate professional, and my stepfather, an architect for the City of San Francisco. These mentors helped me understand design from both a cinematic and architectural perspective. My creative journey began in elementary theater, later gaining full production experience during high school, where I served on the theater departments board. Growing up, I had a small business reviving found objects into custom furniture and lighting. I later expanded into digital design, mastering graphic and web design, while also gaining professional experience with major brands like Pottery Barn as a design center specialist. Here, I collaborated on sourcing décor for the Lucas Ranch Bed & Breakfast. Later, I also worked for Nordstrom, where I specialized in designer accessories & handbags as well as high-profile client relationships.
In 2021, I was accepted into UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Television, where I focused on production design and management. I worked in the UCLA prop shop for over two years, specialising in prop construction and project management, collaborating on over fifteen full-scale theater productions. With this experience, I also designed and managed film productions at UCLA, LMU, USC, NYFA, and with independent film companies. I've created sets, both on sound stages and location, constructed props, and managed full department teams. Until recently, I remodeled and managed a historic 1942 apartment building in Westwood, overseeing renovations that boosted both the aesthetics and occupancy. These experiences sharpened my project management skills and deepened my understanding of how good design can transform new and lived spaces.
Dakota Blaze Fox Designs is where my passion for storytelling meets a versatile design practice, spanning interiors, sets, and digital experiences. I believe great design is more than visual impact; it’s about connection, meaning, and bringing a storyteller's or client’s vision to life with clarity and care.
